On September 6th, 16th, and 18th, HS International Relations students of period G visited 3M to discuss peace day (Sept. 21).
Unfortunately, I missed the first day; but other two days were interesting as well. On the second visit, we all prepared visual presentation on atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
While IR students worked on the cause and the effect of the bomb, brief history, aftereffect, the relationship of the nations, and status of the world, the third graders read the story of Sadako. They understood the effects of the atomic bomb and the importance of maintaining peace in the world. It was inspiring and ironic to see how young children are so aware of how to make peaceful community at school, yet those who are much older and stronger, such as Presidents and Leaders of different nations, do not follow those simple steps to design peace together.
As some points we brought up together to bring peace, we had: Communicating and interacting respectfully, seeking peaceful solutions, engage in democratic, collaborative decision making, practice empathy, compassion and forgiveness, and work to sustain our environment (source: Ms. Popinchalk). These points not only adapt to our everyday life, but also as global steps to World Peace.
I believe that overall the visit was very effective for both IR students and 3rd grade class. We both worked hard to understand different ways countries react to one another that causes conflicts, and also ways they MAY act in order to solve problems.
Also I really appreciated the way the kids were paying attention to our presentations because I realize some of the topics are very difficult to comprehend completely; yet they did not interrupt or show signs of impatience. This is very important step towards peace because we are the ones who are going to be in charge of the world, so we must educate and promote peace to as many students as possible. Additionally, making a peace crane was very suitable for this project because while we think of peace together, we also learned how to cooperate and solve problems together.
